You usually have to start out at an academy at the beginning of the game, and you HATE it, because you can't do anything cool, but you HAVE to do it, or else you'll never learn how to use fire magic or summon holy creatures.

You always get forced to use sucky party members in crucial fights, instead of the badasses you've been forgoing sleep over in order to train....
or, at least, that's what it's been doing to me in Suikoden V

Theres always a woman who the main character loves, a woman who is a badass and a woman who is really annoying. (FF7: Aerith, Tifa & Yuffie and FF8: Riona, Quistis & Selphie. Oh, how I did hate Selphie)
And depending on the RPG, theres always Elves. Damned Elves. Never Dwarves, but Elves. Tall, pointy eared, sexy, blonde Elves. There are only two elves I've ever seen who aren't blonde. Arwen and Elrond, and thats because neither are full elf.
