Do they help set our goals higher, thus enhancing our knowledge to new heights that we otherwise would not have reached on our own,
or
do they restrict our knowledge to what is required of us on the tests, hurting our knowledge of all subjects not tested over?
or..........do you have a different view?

They most definetly restrict our knowledge. Teachers only teach what will be on the test and nothing more. This only stops us from understanding more of the subject the test is in when much more could be taught.

But if we didn't have the standardized tests, how do you know that the teachers would even teach that much? They don't have a goal to achieve, so why would they teach anything past what they felt like teaching?

I, personally, believe in a combination of several different forms of learning.......with one person, who knows the person well, to decide how to present all this info to him.
This, however, is an EXTREMELY rare situation, as most kids are just numbers to be shuffled through school, packaged, labeled, and shipped out to various jobs.......or, if they don't meet quality control specifications, whether they are below or above the limits, or dumped out onto the street to rot.

That's a great way of thinking of it. You've never actually talked to a school councelor have you? You're more than a statistic. I had to in eighth grade because my grades sucked (two D's).

I don't mean like a counselor who's assigned to a bunch of kids.
I'm talking like a full-time aide, who is also you combat teacher, who makes you run through the woods with a sword, for days at a time, dodging attacks from his black ops te-......errrr........well, maybe not THAT intimate, but.....
The thing I'm talking about can really only work in an extremely small setting.......like, an elder who knows you really well, is basically you main instructor, making sure you process everything the correct you in which YOU learn best......and all that kind of crap.
But, again.....that ain't gonna work in a big city, were there are a couple of HUNDRED kids, just in your class.
