Taxonomy - The science of categorization, or classification, of things based on a predetermined system.
Simply put, a human falls into the following: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Sub-Phylum: Vertebrata Class: Mammalia Sub-Class: Eutheria Order: Primata Sub-Order: Arthropoidea Family: Hominidae Genus: Homo Species: Sapiens
Animalia: multicellular; each cell has a nucleus and membrane; no chlorophyll Chordata: as a fetus, you had a notocord (a rod made of cartilage). Vertebrata: has a spinal cord of bone formed from the notocord Mammalia: ability to breast feed (if correct gender); warm blooded Eutheria: start life in placenta Primata: collarbone; flat fingernails; opposable thumbs Arthropoidea: eyes in front of head (opposed to the side) Hominidae: no tail; walk on two legs Homo Sapien: "the wise human"or "the clever human."
